Who am I?
Words. They make up our
lives, our conversations, and even our feelings. So what better way to describe
ourselves than by using words?
Amber. A name that
according to the dictionary is defined as a yellowish-brown tree sap. Beautiful sounding isn’t it? Yeah the tree
sap, not me.

What about a necklace. A
piece of cloth material stuck together by two individual bracelets. Something
that doesn’t have any spiritual value, or probably at this rate a monetary one
either. However, this necklace is something that describes me and my life
perfectly, and although it may not be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever
seen, it is worth more to me than any 25 karat gold one I could buy.
But these words of
“Amber”, and “Necklace” are just words, and they don’t really describe who we
are. Yes they have true dictionary definitions, but it is more so the actual
objects and what they represent that define us. Let me explain.
Jesus. Loves. Me. When I
was in the fourth grade I was given these two “Jesus Loves Me” bracelets that I
combined as a necklace. And ever since
then, I honestly haven’t taken them off. (Well, I mean other than to wash them,
or shower) But generally you won’t see me without them! Yet it isn’t even the necklace that truly
defines who I am, but the memories that came with it.

Child. As a small child,
I would hold tightly onto this necklace when I got scared. When I took that first test and thought I
would cry. Or grew up and found out that
not everyone who is nice to you is friend.
When I was getting ready to perform as “Lucy” in my first Charlie Brown
play, or speak the devotional as FCA Co-Captain, all I ever needed was to hold
that necklace in my hand. Because as
soon as I did, it somehow always reminded me that God was right there with me,
forever by my side.

College. And even now as
I am in college, I still keep this necklace with me wherever I go. To let it be my reminder that whether I am at
dance class, writing for fun, running, or stressing about how I’m going to
understand God’s plan for me, I just need to soak in His presence and reflect
on more than just the “words” that the world throws at me.
Amber. The name of who I
am, and who I want to be. So much more than what the dictionary or a set of
words define me as.
